Video: Use an Umbrella for Self-Defense

Video Transcript

Hi. My name is Tres Tew. I'm an instructor at Yeshua's Ryu Martial Arts and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to be teaching you about improvised weapons. Now we have two different types of umbrellas that can be used as improvised weapons. First of all, obviously it's raining outside, or it's wet, so we have our umbrella. Our attacker comes in at us. He's either in close or whatever. This one we can use much like an extendable baton while it's closed, okay. So if he comes in with an attack, we are simply hooking it out of the way, using the butt of it to assist with our hook. And then, coming up in and striking into the throat here. So we are eliminating the threat of the knife hooking up, striking in and from here, we can hook back again. It's a very effective hooking and striking tool. Now, with a long umbrella, this is very different. If he pulls a knife on you, you can use this in a number of ways. You can either just straight up strike him with it, or you can wait for him to come in and strike his hand and then come in. You can see there's a metal part right here that is very effective for puncturing. Or, you know, you can just strike into him. One of the unique things about an umbrella is that it can be opened creating a type of frightening effect on your attacker. Also, another way that it can be used while opened: once this is opened, if he stabs at me, I can catch the blade in between one of these and just shoulder it out of the way and then come in again. So that's a few ways that an umbrella can be used as an improvised weapon.
