Can Bettas Actually Live in Betta Fish Bowls?
This is a question I hear a lot.
These fish bowls do come in all shapes and sizes.
There are probably a dozen manufacturers that produce the majority of bowls that are available on the market today.
With all the shapes, sizes and color choices available, there are hundreds of bowls to choose from.
The water capacity of these bowls range from about 12 ounces at the smallest to 1 or 2 gallons as the largest.
The correct answer to this question in my opinion is YES.
You can put your fish in one of these small spaces and he or she will be probably live for a few months, or perhaps longer.
But personally, I do not use these small containers, and do not recommend that you do either.
I have several reasons as to why.
The first and primary reason is that your fish needs room to swim around.
In the wild, where these fish are caught and then sent out to your aquarium store, they live in shallow pools of water that are huge.
Some live in rice paddies, some live in ditches that run along roads, and others live in places where water gathers after it rains.
If your betta fish does not have enough room to swim around, he or she will get sick and die prematurely Other reasons include the fact that you will have to constantly do water changes (which can stress your fish too).
You will not be able to add decorations or plants to make the bowl more attractive, and you will not be able to add other fish to a fish bowl.
What I recommend and actually do myself is to house your fish in a 5 or 10 gallon aquarium instead.
Your fish will then thrive instead of just existing.
There is room for you to add plants and decorations.
It is easier to clean.
And most importantly, your betta will live a much happier life.
