Homemade Harmonicas
- Get a toothed comb of any size and wax or tissue paper of the same length. Wrap the tissue paper around the comb, making sure the teeth are pointing toward the fold of the tissue paper, and make sure the open edges of the tissue paper are against the handle or solid part of the comb. Play the harmonica by putting the teeth of the comb against your lips and gently blowing or humming. You can try humming different notes or using different size combs, or ones with wider teeth.
- Find three popsicle sticks of the same length, and three rubber bands, one of them wide. Place the wider rubber band over the edge of one popsicle stick lengthwise, making sure it stretches tightly across without bending the stick. Moisten the other two popsicle sticks and gently bend them, being careful not to break them. Put the popsicle stick with the rubber band between the bent sticks and tie the other rubber bands at each end, creating a very thin oval-shaped harmonica.
Play the popsicle stick harmonica like a real one, by blowing or drawing air through the sides. Make different sounds by blowing or drawing harder or softer, or even flicking your tongue to trill, like rolling your R's.
