School of Oriental and African Studies

Definition:

SOAS began as the School of Oriental Studies in Finsbury Circus, London in 1916. It became the School of Oriental and African Studies in 1938 and moved to its current Russell Square address in 1941. The school was expanded as a result of two reports (the Scarborough Report in 1945 and the Hayter Report of 1961), both of which suggested that study of African, Asian, and non-European languages should be encouraged in the UK to ensure the nation's international status.

SOAS is particularly recognized the quality of its teaching, its high standard of post-graduate research, and for its library, which was opened in 1973 and houses over 1.2 million books.
