Visiting Armenian History In Gyumri
Gyumri in Armenia is one of the oldest cities of the country. Various Uratrian inscriptions from the 8th century BC mention Gyumri by its ancient name of Kumayri. In fact, Gyumri has been named and renamed several times in the history. The city was also called Alexandropol and Leninakan during the Russian era. It has a population of about 146,000 people according to the 2009 official census. The city suffered much loss during a devastating earthquake of 1988. As it is assumed, the city was probably founded by the Greek colonists in the 5th century BC. Some sources also say that the city was founded much earlier in the 7th century BC by the Cimmerians.
