Fireplace Directions
- 1). Open the damper of the fireplace to allow air to create a draft to draw air through the fireplace.
- 2). Place tinder in a small bundle in the center of the fireplace. Select fine wood shavings, shredded paper or other highly combustible material.
- 3). Organize kindling near the fireplace for easy access. Sort kindling into progressively larger sizes that you can put on the fire as it grows.
- 4). Place larger pieces of tinder and small kindling over the tinder pile. Stack the larger tinder and kindling in a tepee shape around the tinder pile. Leave one side of the tepee shape open for lighting the fire.
- 5). Light the small tinder pile with a match or striker. Watch for curls of smoke indicating the tinder has caught fire. Blow gently on the smoldering fire to add oxygen.
- 6). Allow the larger tinder and small kindling to catch fire and burn. Add progressively larger pieces of kindling and wood to increase the size and amount of heat generated by the fire. Add longer-burning logs to the fire when the fire is burning well.
