See Free Outdoor Movies in the U Street Corridor of Washington DC



The U Street Outdoor Movie Series features a diverse selection of free documentaries and films sponsored by Friends of Harrison Recreation Center, the U Street Neighborhood Association, and the Meridian Hill Neighborhood Association. This year’s movie series lineup includes films that feature and celebrate Washington DC, including both classic and family friendly Hollywood films set in Washington, DC, documentaries addressing environmental and education issues that resonate in Washington, DC, and films about local U Street entertainment institutions such as the Howard Theater and the 9:30 Club.

Donations will be accepted to benefit the Friends of Harrison Recreation Center. Bring your own picnic and low-backed chairs. Several local food truck vendors will be on site serving food.

Dates and Times:  July 15, August 19, and September 12 and 16, 2015.
Gates open at 7 p.m. Movies begin at sundown, around 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 15: Reefer Madness and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (Rain Date:  July 22). Tow films: Reefer Madness (1936) Not Rated. High-school principal Dr. Alfred Carroll relates to an audience of parents that marijuana can have devastating effects on teens. In Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) Rated PG. Two high school buddies start a band as they are about to fail their history class, which means Ted would be sent to military school. They receive help from Rufus,  a traveler from a future where their band is the foundation for a perfect society. 

Wednesday, August 19: Monsoon Wedding (Rain Date: August 26) (2001) Rated R.

The  comedy unites a Punjabi family for the wedding of a family member. Relatives from all over the world descend on Delhi for the wedding ceremony.

Saturday, September 12: Disney's Frozen (Rain Date: Sept. 19) This film will be shown earlier and on a Saturday, in order to accommodate families with young and school-aged children (2013) Rated PG. When their kingdom becomes trapped in perpetual winter, fearless Anna joins forces with mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick to find Anna's sister, Snow Queen Elsa and break her icy spell.

Wednesday, September 16: The Wiz (Rain Date: Sept. 23) (1978) Rated G. The film is an adaption of "The Wizard of Oz" that tries to capture the essence of the African American experience.
