How Keyword Synonyms Saved the Day

Keyword research is tiring, isn't it? But find the right one and you feel like a lepracaun that found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. First off please know that I am not an internet guru just a simple person with one simple tip from personal experience. I have a website related to candy making and sweets. The keywords for my theme can be very competive. Imagine competing for "chocolate" or, say "cake"- there are millions of search results. Now picture your site niche, learning a musical instrument, learning Spanish, photography, carpentry, and on and on. If you have a fairly new site like mine could you imagine where I would rank if I focused my keywords on "chocolate" or if you focused too much on say, "learn Spanish"? It would take an FBI agent to find our pages. It was frustrating at the beginning as I built new page after new page for my site trying to figure out how to be found, then to top it off there were so many other things to learn not just SEO. I would create a new dessert recipe pages for cookies, pies, cakes, etc before doing proper keyword research.
I then chose to research more thoroughly first then create pages for with those keywords. I remember I wanted to add a "rice krispie treats" page. Of course not everyone knows how to spell it, so I discovered that at the time the similar combination of "rice crispy treats" wasn't nearly as competitive. So I jumped all over this keywords synonym combination realizing that many people would spell their searches for this treat based on how it sounds to them. I'm glad I did all this because I have ranked high in either the first or second page of Google, Yahoo and Bing for a while now and it has become my most visited page. I also added other popular variations of rice crispy treats recipes to it and the funny thing was that because of the popularity of this one single page on my site I decided to focus more efforts on new pages devoted to new rice crispy treats recipes. I even ended up creating my own recipes for gourmet rice crispy treats.
How big of a variety could there possibly be for such a simple treat? A ton.
To take advantage of this keyword niche I started to make fancy Christmas, Halloween, Valentines Day, etc chocolate covered rice crispy treats, built pages just for each recipe and internally linked them to the original page, making up a web of pages, a site within a site if you will. I became an expert at making up these new delicious recipes, people at work loved them- and I did this all because the keywords synonyms, "rice crispy treats" instead of "rice krispie treats".
That wasn't all I did. I wanted to create backlinks to these pages. I started to write articles that contained backlinks to the page. I had already written some high ranking articles for other pages within my site that brought me new traffic. So I found a way to bring everything together. What I mean is my site isn't just about candy making, but also giving them as gifts. I also developed an effective article strategy to bring in more traffic. I started to write articles for a variety of gift giving occasions on how to make rice crispy treats. Some articles suggested rice crispy treats for teachers gifts, others explained how to make gourmet chocolate covered rice crispy treats, other articles recommended that making homemade edible gifts for your clients could bring in more referrals for your business, and so on. I even wrote an article how to make candy sushi using rice crispy treats. The variety of different rice crispy treat recipes on which to write articles blended with the less competitive combination of similar keywords "rice crispy treats" instead of "rice krispie treats" created many backlinks to my site from the other website that republished my articles. Some people were more interested in teacher gifts ideas while others were drawn more to just how to make chocolate covered rice crispy treats, then there were the mothers who were looking for projects to do with their children so they liked the articles on how to make "rice crispy treats" candy sushi.
All of these articles contained inbound links directed back to my site. Without these other rice crispy treats variations I would have created less backlinks to my site.
The links from these articles were pointed at both my original page and to the other separate holiday treats. I'm still creating new recipes and at some point will make ebooks for them. Wow, there's so much to do! I would not have experienced any of this success without coming across this keyword niche. Now the popularity of the keyword niche "rice crispy treats" has grown substantially since I discovered it.
Are there variations of keywords synonyms that you could use for your site like instead of "cheap marketing tips" maybe "thrifty marketing strategies"? Could you develop an article writing plan for your site to create backlinks? Instead of "Spanish lessons tutorial" you could try "Castellano lessons tutorial". Could you separate a compound word into two so instead of "pennypinching marketing ideas" it could be "penny pinching marketing ideas" or "home made" instead of "homemade". If you don't want to use these keyword synonyms in your webpages, especially for the already existing pages then I would at least suggest using them in the articles you write. A great tool to use is the Google Adword Tool, it's free. It provides a list of the different keywords people search for. This is a very popular tool for just about every webmaster if you haven't already discovered it.
Good luck!
