How to Refill a Saltwater Pool

    • 1). Sweep the floor of the pool with a broom to get rid of as much dirt and debris as possible. Do not wear shoes in the empty pool if it has vinyl lining.

    • 2). Place one end of a garden hose in the bottom of the pool, with the other end of the hose connected to an outdoor water spigot.

    • 3). Turn on the water and let it flow into the pool. If the pool has a vinyl liner with wrinkles, stand in the pool immediately after turning on the water. Push the wrinkles on the floor of the pool toward the pool walls as soon as it's filled with an inch of water. The wrinkles can be pushed manually, but a pool brush works well for larger pools.

    • 4). Turn off the water as soon as the level is just above the pool's skimmer. Turn on the pool's pump system to start circulating the water.

    • 5). Add the salt to the pool. Since new water is in the pool, it's likely that the current salt level is nearly nonexistent. Add 100 lbs. of salt for every 4,000 gallons of water to bring the salt level to 4,000 parts per million. Allow the pump to run throughout the night.

    • 6). Check the salt level using a salt test strip the following day. Add more salt using the same ratio as before if the level is below 4,000 ppm. If the salt level is 6,000 ppm or above, drain 2 to 3 inches of water and replace it with fresh water. Check the salt level the following day and make any adjustments if needed.
