I get calls regularly from potential clients needing professional head shots taken for their online profile. I start the conversation by asking them what they are trying to achieve, what overall look are they wanting to share with the photos they need taken. Do they want to appear formal and straight forward or would they like to look casual and relaxed. I feel that people are often more inclined to contact someone when viewing a profile photo if it makes that person appear to be pleasant and approachable. Social media has created a relaxed I want to get to know you first environment and less of the traditional I want your business model.

I offer plain or textured background options or to photograph my subject in a natural setting (which I prefer). I always allow the subject to let me know what they feel will best fit their needs because my goal is always for the client to be happy with the outcome of the photos. Lighting is important and I prefer to set a mood to try and capture the personality of the professional. I also like to learn as much about what they do and/or what they are selling so I will know who the audience is they are wanting to connect with.

I believe what matters most are that you look comfortable and inviting to your audience. Whether you are selling yourselves or a product you need to invite those looking at your profile into your page with a photo that eludes a pleasant personality. A simple smile and a comfortable presence will make the viewer feel like they want to know more! Most importantly a great photo will make you look professional and show that you care about your business, that you are willing to make the effort to have a great photo taken that represents you.
