How My Family Dresses For Safety And Fun When Hiking And Geocaching
Hiking and geocaching are some of my family's favorite activities in almost any weather all year round.
To be safe when we go we dress accordingly from the top down to the bottom.
It is very important to include the right hats down to the right shoes.
Here are a few tips we have learned along the way.
Hats are very important piece of clothing when hiking.
It is a great way to keep the sun out of your eyes and face.
I get fewer sun burns on my face when I wear a hat.
I also don't have to worry about ticks so much when the head is covered.
Hats are also great in the rain or snow.
You can wear anything from a ball cap to a toboggan.
Even a cowboy hat if you like.
When it comes to shirts, I would wear a few layers.
The inner layer closest to the skin should be for moisture control.
You want a nice fabric that will wick away perspiration to control body temperature.
Helps keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
The next layer or middle layer should be for temperature control or insulation.
It helps to retain heat by trapping air close to the body.
We use a long sleeve button up shirt for all that and also to help prevent snake bites.
My Grandfather taught that to my Mom when they would hike in the hills.
The outer layer helps protect from the weather elements.
Rain, snow, or even the sun can make your hiking trip an unhappy one unless you have the right outer wear.
The pants you choose can play an important part of hiking safety also.
We wear thick jeans because when tucked into our boots it can be a great way to help prevent snake bites.
The snake can't get a good bite through the jeans.
It also makes it hard for ticks to crawl up your legs.
No one wants that.
You can also wear a good pair of cargo shorts if the weather is too hot.
Just keep an eye out for the snakes and bugs.
The most important piece of clothing will be your boots.
They must provide support and protection.
When you wear a pair of socks that wicks away the moisture, you won't have to worry about blisters.
We wear a high top, thick bottom, and water proof pair when we go out hiking.
The high tops give support to my ankles.
Thick threaded bottoms are great to protect my feet from injury and give good traction over rocks.
Water proofing is my favorite feature because we step in many small streams.
I am not a fan of wet socks.
Above all when getting dressed to go hiking or geocaching you need to know your area and climate.
The choices you make can help keep you safe and comfortable.
Don't let the wrong clothing get in the way of a wonderful activity with your family.
Just remember these tips before you go and you will have a wonderful time.
