Judge Judy Sheindlin is an American lawyer and judge who shot to fame with her show "Judge Judy".
It is an American court show in which Judy Sheindlin presides over small claim cases.
It is a show wherein the viewers are taken to a small time court room were real small claim cases are brought to justice.
This show is now in the 15th season this year.
Judge Judy Sheindlin was known for her tough but fair judgments in the family court of New York.
Judith Susan Blum was born on 21st October 1942 in Brooklyn, New York to parents Murray and Ethel Blum.
She completed her high school at James Madison High School, Brooklyn.
She then majored in government from the American University, Washington, D.
C.
She then went on to do law from Washington College of Law and later completed it from the New York Law School.
At the Washington College of Law she was the only female student amongst 126 students.
She got her graduation and also passed her Bar exam in 1965 and joined a cosmetics firm as a corporate lawyer.
She soon lost her interest in the job and joined the family court as a prosecutor.
Back then she was handling cases like child abuse, domestic violence and juvenile crime.
She was noticed by the New York Mayor Ed Koch for her work and no-nonsense attitude and appointed her as judge in criminal court.
She soon earned a reputation for herself with her wise judgments and notoriously fast decision making ability.
She was also known for being a tough judge.
She soon was promoted to supervising judge in Manhattan division of the family court.
She retired as criminal judge in 1996.
She was woman who worked toward making the court system work for the common good.
During her service she was featured in quite number of articles but she earned a national recognition after appearing in CBS's 60 Minutes.
She is also the author of the book "Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining".
After her retirement she accepted the offer from Big Ticket Television for the courtroom television program, Judge Judy that would feature real cases with real rulings.
Since its debut in September 16, 1996, it was an instant hit with the audience and she became a noted celebrity.
She is liked by her audience for her wit and no-nonsense attitude.
This show was nominated thirteen times for "Daytime Emmy Awards".
She is one of the celebrities to be ranked in the Forbes magazine and is listed as one of the top 20 richest women in entertainment.
