How to Install 20 X 40 Pool Liners
- 1). Apply a strip of duct tape along the seams on the inside of the pool. Also completely tape over the pool drain, skimmer and light.
- 2). Apply foam wall adhesive to the walls of the pool and unroll the foam wall cushioning along the walls. Press the wall foam with your hands to secure it to the wall.
- 3). Use a box cutter to cut the foam cushioning in the locations of the skimmer, light and return openings by feeling the wall with your hands until you locate the depressions.
- 4). Clean the pool floor thoroughly of all dirt sand and debris. If the pool floor is cement, this can be accomplished by sweeping it with a large push broom and then vacuuming the debris with an industrial vacuum. If the pool floor is sand, remove all visible pebbles and stones from the floor surface and then use the broom to sweep over the floor once to even it out.
- 5). Spread the liner over the pool opening with the smooth side down starting at the deep end and moving toward the shallow end. This requires four people, one at each corner of the liner.
- 6). Insert the pool liner into the liner track located along the upper ridge of the pool's edge by inserting the liner beading into the liner track.
- 7). Remove a 4 to 5 inch section of liner from the track on one of the pool walls. Insert a suction vacuum into the opening and use duct tape to seal the opening around the vacuum hose. Turn the vacuum on to remove all air from beneath the pool liner. If wrinkles still exist after 30 minutes, turn off the vacuum and use a pool brush to smooth them out and then turn the vacuum back on.
- 8). Fill the pool with water until it reaches 4 inches up the hopper, which is the indentation in the deep end. Climb into the pool, go to the deep end and feel around until you locate the drain opening.
- 9). Install the metal hardware face plates for the drain by attaching it to the pool floor using a screwdriver and the provided screws. Once installed, use a razor blade to cut the liner around the interior of the drain faceplate and remove. Install the drain cover by inserting it into the drain face pate and rotating clockwise.

Install the left, right and bottom rails along the sides and bottom of the pool stairs using the provided screws. Use a razor blade to cut along the outer edge of the rails and remove the excess liner to reveal the stairs.
