How to Get a Business Start Up Grant

    • 1). Write a formal business plan. Outline the main idea behind your business idea. Narrow your focus by writing down your goals for the business, vision for the business and the resources needed to actualize both of those things. Include about three good reasons why you believe your idea is sound.

    • 2). Develop a business model. Consider who will be working for your business, how it will be sustained, and what population it will serve.

    • 3). Create a mission statement for your business. Use the vision and goals you wrote down to guide your mission statement.

    • 4). Review possible start-up grants available. Read the grant applications and directions for grant proposals since there are grants set aside for specific populations or business ideas and needs. Organize all the possible grants for your business into like categories.

    • 5). Design a proposal for each grant. Create a flexible form letter that outlines your business plan, model, and mission, but make sure you tailor each grant proposal to the organization offering the grant. Write professionally, or contract an independent grant writer to compose the proposals for you--if you doubt your writing skills, this is a worthy investment.
