"Revolution 2020" by Chetan Bhagat - Story of Love, Sacrifice, Corruption and Ambition
A good read from Chetan Bhagat, author of a few best sellers in the past.
A story of a poor young man, who is not very good at studies and can't make it to any engineering college due to lack of good score and circumstances.
He is from a small town and is madly in love with a friend, who in turn is in love with someone else.
Story is well-narrated and each character is etched out beautifully and very distinctly.
A young director of an Engineering College, invites the author home for dinner and himself passes out in his bathroom.
Author rushes him to the hospital and ends up hearing his story all night long.
That story is what this novel is all about.
Story of Gopal, a simple, poor boy who lost his heart when he stole a classmate's Tiffin.
Gopal is madly in love with his childhood friend Aarti, who falls for his best friend, Raghav as they grow up.
Gopal can't get through in engineering on his first attempt, while Raghav makes it to IIT-BHU (a prestigious Indian Engineering college).
Even after a year of coaching, Gopal ends up with a poor rank and his father dies leaving behind lot of debt on his young shoulders.
Gopal has no hopes, no options left for him in life and thats when he meets a stranger who changes his life forever.
Gopal never goes to an engineering college but with the help of a local MLA, he opens his own private engineering college and becomes rich in a very short span of time.
His feelings for Aarti never change or subside, even when she is with her new boyfriend.
Life takes everyone on a ride, things change- situations, status, ambitions, aspirations, friendships change and so does love...
The main protagonist lives in Varanasi, a small city in northern India, which is famous for River Ganges and for cremation of dead bodies.
It is generally believed that if a dead body is cremated in Varanasi, soul goes directly to heaven and that person attains Nirvana.
I don't know if this book qualifies as an amazing read like "Five Point Someone" or as a bad one like "One night at Call Centre" from the same author.
But this is mediocre, talks about a love story, beginning of a revolution, corruption in Indian system, politics, ambitions and money.
It has its up and downs as is with most stories, at times it is believable and interesting, at times it's totally unbelievable and boring.
But overall, a simple read which won't take much time and would leave you with some thoughts.
