Allergens

• Like people, dogs can be allergic to nearly anything. Common potential allergens include trees, pollen, fleas, insect bites, certain toys, grass, fabrics or even the dog's own food.

• If the overseeing veterinarian suspects that food allergies are to blame, the dog may undergo an elimination diet. In an elimination diet, certain foods or ingredients are eliminated until the cause is found.
  
  

Diagnosis: Blood Tests or Intradermal Tests

• Blood tests or intradermal tests are other options. Blood tests use a sample of the dog's blood, which is then screened for reactions against potential allergies. Meanwhile, intradermal testing requires that potential allergens be injected directly into the skin to test for a reaction.
  
  

Treatment

• There is a wide variety of treatment options available for allergies in a dog including topical itch relief solutions, dietary supplements such as Omega 3 fatty acids, steroids to reduce inflammation and antihistamines.
