Backup Your iPhone
Push Gmail for the iPhone lets you get new e-mail messages delivered to your iPhone more quickly. But the feature isn't built in to the iPhone; you need to use Google Sync to get it. Here's a quick guide that explains exactly how to set it up.
Before you begin adding Google Sync to your iPhone, you should backup all of your data.
You can backup your iPhone using iTunes. Connect your iPhone to your computer using its USB cord and open iTunes.
You need to be running version 3.0 or higher of the iPhone OS in order to run Google Sync. (You can check which version your phone is running by going into Settings, then General, then About, and then Version.) If you're not already running version 3.0 or higher, you can update it while your phone is connected to iTunes.
Add a New E-Mail Account
On your iPhone, open the "Settings" menu. Once there, scroll down and select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars."
At the top of this page, you'll see the option called "Add Account…" Select that.
The next page shows you a list of types of e-mail accounts. Select "Microsoft Exchange."
Note: The iPhone only supports one Microsoft Exhange e-mail account, so if you're already using this for another e-mail account (such as a corporate Outlook e-mail account), you cannot setup Google Sync.
Enter Your Gmail Account Details
In the "Email" field, type in your full Gmail address.
Leave the "Domain" field blank.
In the "Username" field, enter your full Gmail address again.
In the "Password" field, enter your account password.
The "Description" field may say "Exchange" or it may be filled in with your e-mail address; you can change this to something else if you like. (This is the name that you'll use to identify this account when you access the iPhone's e-mail app.)
Note: If you already have your iPhone setup to check this Gmail account (not using the Google Sync feature), you are creating a duplicate e-mail account. You can delete the other account either before or after you add this one, as you don't need two versions of the same e-mail account setup on your phone.
Tap "Next."
You may see a message that says "Unable to Verify Certificate." If you do, tap "Accept."
A new field, called "Server," will appear on the screen. Enter m.google.com.
Tap "Next."
You can use Google Sync to sync your Mail, Contacts, and Calendars to your iPhone. Select which ones you'd like to sync on this page.
If you choose to sync your contacts and calendars, you'll see a message pop up. It asks: "What would you like to do with existing local contacts on your iPhone."
To avoid deleting your existing contacts, make sure you select "Keep on My iPhone."
You'll see a warning that you may see duplicate contacts.
But, again, if you want to avoid deleting all of your contacts, this is your only option.
You need the Push feature enabled on your iPhone to use Google Sync to its full advantage. Make sure Push is enabled by going into the "Settings" and then selecting "Mail, Contacts, Calendars." If Push is not on, turn it on now.
Your new e-mail account will begin to sync automatically, and you should notice immediate delivery of messages as they arrive.
