How to Change Motor Home Shocks

    • 1). Raise the motor home at the shock to be replaced using the floor jack. Place it onto a jack stand at the frame rail.

    • 2). Loosen the lower shock mount nut by turning it counterclockwise, but do not remove it.

    • 3). Remove the top shock mount bolt by turning its nut counterclockwise, then pulling the bolt straight out of the eyelet. Some models may have two vertical bolts that hold a mount plate to the eyelet of the shock; remove them by turning them counterclockwise.

    • 4). Remove the lower shock mount nut, then slide the shock off the mount bolt. The shock will be freed and will drop out of the motor home.

    • 5). Replace the shock with a new unit by positioning it into the top mount first, then securing the top mount bolt or plate by turning the hardware clockwise until snug.

    • 6). Cut the keeper strap on the shock body, and slide the lower shock eyelet over the lower mount bolt as it passes by. The shock will expand when the strap is cut, and it will slowly drop to the correct level. If the shock expands too far, it may be difficult to compress.

    • 7). Tighten the lower shock mount nut in a clockwise direction.

    • 8). Lower the motor home from the jack stand with the floor jack.

    • 9). Repeat the process on the remaining shocks.
