In a study published online today by the New England Journal of Medicine, American and Swedish researchers found that men who inherit four or more genetic mutations already individually linked to prostate cancer are 400 to 500 per cent more likely than other men to develop the disease.
"Prostate cancer is common.
If you just take random men from the population and you biopsy their prostates -- I'm talking about the average guy over 60 walking down the street -- you can find prostate cancer in 20 per cent of them," says Narod.
But less than one in five men will die of the disease.
"So the big gulf in our understanding and management is how to distinguish those cancers that are likely to kill you and those ones that are likely to grow so slowly that you're going to outlive the cancer.
