How to File for Welfare in Indiana

    • 1). Fill out the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration's online screening tool to see if you qualify for benefits. If you find that you are on the border of a decision, go ahead and apply for benefits. The screening tool is not a final decision, just a tool to aid you in determining if you should apply.

    • 2). Click on your county of residence from Indiana's Family and Social Services Administration Directory of Local Offices.

    • 3). Click on the "Apply for Benefits" button to fill out the online application. If you would rather fill it out in person, you will see the address and telephone number of the agency already listed on the screen.

    • 4). Wait for a case manager from the Social Services agency to call for an in-person interview. If you choose to apply at the office rather than online, you may have the in-person interview the same day.

    • 5). Provide the case manager with proof of residency (rental agreement, mortgage statement); proof of income (paycheck, Social Security statement, child support, interest income, unemployment benefits); proof of identity (Birth Certificate, Driver's License); and proof of household expenses (utility bills, rental agreement, mortgage statement). All documents must be originals. The case manager will photocopy them on the spot and return the documents to you for your records.
