How to Install Prefinished Hardwood Floors

    • 1). Prepare the subfloor. Place a layer of asphalt paper across the entire surface---this acts as a moisture barrier, keeping the hardwood floor free from damage. Tape the paper together at the seams, but do not fasten it to the subfloor.

    • 2). Cover the subfloor and moisture barrier with a single layer of 1/4 inch plywood, creating a level base. Fasten the plywood to the subfloor with concrete nails.

    • 3). Measure the room to determine the amount of material needed. Multiply the length of the room by the width to calculate square footage. Add 10 percent to this value before making your purchase, to allow for damaged pieces or future repairs.

    • 4). Purchase hardwood flooring at a home improvement or hardware store. Allow it to acclimate for 2 to 3 days, because wood expands and contracts based on temperature and humidity.

    • 5). Begin laying the planks along the longest wall. Leave a 1/4 inch gap between the wood flooring and the wall, to allow for future expansion. The first row is secured using floor nails and a hammer, with nails placed every 6 inches.

    • 6). Continue laying the wood planks and stagger the joints on each row. Tap the side of each plank with a rubber mallet to ensure that it is tight to the adjacent row. Use a floor nailer to secure the remaining rows into place.

    • 7). Cut boards with a miter saw, if necessary. Use remaining pieces that are more than 1 foot long---shorter sections produce poor results.

    • 8). Use a pry bar to force the last row into place. Leave another 1/4 inch gap at the base of the wall for expansion.

    • 9). Install baseboards around the perimeter of the room, to cover expansion gaps and complete the project.
