How to Find Out if an Attorney is on the Bar
- 1). Navigate to the jurisdiction's lawyer registration or disciplinary board website. Every jurisdiction has a registration board or disciplinary board that is part of the state's Supreme Court. This board maintains records of all active and inactive licensed attorneys. Locate the attorney search function of the website.
- 2). Enter the attorney's name or other search criteria. You can, in most cases, search for the attorney by her name, part of her name, what her name sounds like or her registration or license number. Once you enter the information submit your search.
- 3). Locate the attorney in the results. Once you find the attorney, click on her name or license number to retrieve information about the attorney. The results will provide information regarding whether or not the lawyer is active, inactive or suspended, as well as her contact information.
- 4). Call the registration board or disciplinary board if you cannot find the attorney's name through the online directory search. If the attorney's name is not appearing as part of the directory then she may not be licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction and is not a member of the jurisdiction's bar. The disciplinary board or registration board will be able to search its records to provide you with a definite answer.
