    To Examine and Obtain a Copy of Health Records

    • Under HIPPA, you have the right to inspect and receive a copy of your medical records. You should be able to receive your copies within 30 days, but this can be extended out an additional 30 days if you are given an explanation.

    The Right to Have Corrections Made

    • If you discover an error within your medical records, it could take up to 60 days until the changes takes place. If there is an explanation, the changes could take as long as 90 days.

    Explanation of How Information is Shared

    • Either on your first visit to a health provider or after you submit your paperwork to the insurance company, you will receive a notice explaining how your medical information will be shared. This will explain how and in what ways your information could be used as well as what rights you do have.

    You Must Authorize How Information is Shared

    • You personal health information must never be sold to a solicitor who could use it for various marketing purposes unless you give your consent. If you do give consent, you must sign an authorization form that explains who will receive your information and what it is going to be used for.

    To Find out Why Your Information was Shared

    • Under various circumstances, your health information will be shared. A few instances would include: ensuring your doctor is providing proper care to their patients or alerting you when a major pandemic could be in the area. Under HIPPA, you can receive a free report on how this information was shared once a year. In most situations, you should receive the report within 60 days, but it could take an additional 30 days if you are given an explanation.
