How to get the best out of mini motorcycles
Mini motorcycles are also known as mini choppers, scooters or super pocket bikes. These choppers have a colorful history and have been a hot favorite with bikers all over America. Choppers were born when regular bikes were ‘chopped' to make them lighter, cheaper and smaller. Thanks to their appealing looks and brilliant performance, there was a great surge in interest in these models. Soon, the bikes became mainstream and their popularity grew immensely. Today, thanks to the internet, more and more riders have become mini motorcycle enthusiasts. Mini motorcycles are smaller in size, lighter in weight and cheaper in cost when compared to full-sized motor cycles. In looks and functionality, these are a hybrid of regular bicycle and the Yamaha racing bike of the 70s. Although they may be purchased at a fraction of the price of regular bikes, mini motorcycles are not toy bikes. The efficient, powerful gas and oil engines can take riders up to speeds of 47-50 mph. Expert riders and beginners alike can draw unlimited excitement from these bikes. Mini motorcycles differ in muscle power. So, it is possible for the beginner to buy a much ‘tamer' version and for the racer to buy a mean machine. Whatever the speed of the bike, it is necessary to maintain it properly to get maximum juice out of it, while retaining its power. Some of the most important maintenance tips for mini motorcycles are:
Driving tips to maximize engine life:
- Friction absorbs horsepower! Drop oil or lube on the rollers which rub back and forth at high speed. The lubricant must be given enough time to penetrate between the pins. Therefore, lubricating oil must be applied at least 8-10 minutes before starting the bike. This ensures that the centrifugal action of the bike will not sling away the oil.
- Chains stretch after a while. When this happens, the engine must be moved backward or forward to accommodate the slack. While tightening the chain, ensure that there is some room for play. If the chain is too tight, the bushing or roller bearing may be subjected to friction.
- Replace the chain from time to time, particularly when installing a new clutch.
- Each time the oil is changed; the spark plug must be removed and inspected.
- Check oil level before each use.
- In winters or during vacation, the mini motorcycle must be stored carefully. Move the machine to an outdoor area and drain the fuel tank thoroughly. Gasoline must not be stored for months as this can affect engine performance.
Driving tips to maximize engine life:
- Driving too slowly is detrimental to engine life.
- Engage the clutch fully so that wear and tear is kept minimal.
- Do not drive with the foot on the brake.
