The Side Effects of Cromolyn
- Allergies especially seasonal allergic rhinitis causes the misery and the respiratory discomforts of a stuffy and runny nose, itchy eyes and a cough. Asthma causes wheezing, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Cromolyn is a drug that counteracts the symptoms of an allergy by preventing the release of chemical in the body like histamine. Cromolyn also prevents spasm and narrowing of the breathing passages and the tubules of the lungs caused by foreign antigen such as pollens.
- As with all medications most people tolerate them very well, however there are occasions when side effects may develop. These include sneezing, stuffy nose and itching or burning in the nasal passages. There may also be sore throat, bad taste in the mouth and stomach pain along with headache and a cough. These symptoms usually go away. Contact your doctor for advice if any of these symptoms occur and persists.
- These side effects are related to an allergic reaction, which is a serious medical emergency. Seek immediate emergency medical care for symptoms like wheezing and swelling of the face, tongue and throat and difficulty breathing.
- When a cromolyn oral inhaler is used, the side effects may usually be a cough, throat irritation and increased respiratory spasms. With the use of a Cromolyn intranasal spray, there may be sneezing along with nasal irritation lasting for a short period after using the spray. Cromolyn eye drops may cause eye irritation for a short period immediately after use.
- Do not use cromolyn if you are allergic to it. Discuss your medical history with your doctor and any medications you may be taking, including over-the-counter medications. This will avoid drug interactions or taking this medication with a condition that is contraindicated, such as having had a kidney or liver condition in the past. Do not take cromolyn if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to get pregnant.
