How to Paint Melamine Foil

    • 1). Repair any breaks, chips, or cracks in your melamine by using wood putty. Press hard to help the putty adhere to the particleboard underneath the melamine. Allow the putty to dry completely, then sand to a smooth finish.

    • 2). Lightly sand the entire piece; you only want to roughen up the melamine to give the primer a good surface.

    • 3). Clean off any sawdust with a damp rag.

    • 4). Use a roller to apply one to two coats of primer. Allow the first coat to dry then lightly sand out any imperfections such as drips or roll marks. Apply a second coat if you desire.

    • 5). Roll on your latex paint; you may need to apply two coats depending on the color and quality of your paint. Allow each coat to dry completely.

    • 6). Apply the polyurethane sealant to the whole piece using a foam brush. This finish will help protect your piece from water damage and scratches. Allow to dry completely.
