Thane to Mumbai – From the Suburbs to the Heart of the City

Thane is a city in Maharashtra, located in the suburbs of Mumbai, at the head of the Thane Creek. Thane was the terminus for the first ever passenger train in India. On 16 April 1853, it was to Thane (then Tannah) that the G.I.P. Railway's first ever passenger train service in India rolled out from "Boree Bunder" (now the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus), a historic journey of 34 kilometres. It was hauled by three locomotives – Sahib, Sindh and Sultan. This marked the beginning of the Railway Age in Asia. Thane covers an area of 147 km2 and has a population more than 2.4 million.

Located along the shores of Arabian Sea in the western coast of India, Mumbai is home to millions of people who have come here to make a living. The distance from Thane To Mumbai is 32 km by road. However, travelling from Mumbai to Thane is fairly easy as both the places are well connected by means of road and rail ways. Nonetheless, the most common means of travelling between the places is train. Thane is well-connected with its neighbouring suburbs through Central Railways' suburban railway network. There are 4 railway stations located within Thane city limits. Thane station is part of the Central Railway division of Indian railways. The other 3 stations are Kalwa, Mumbra, Diva which are also the suburbs of Thane.

The time taken to travel is around 40 minutes. The trains from Thane arrive in Mumbai at 3 stations - Mumbai CST (CSTM), Lokmanyatilak T (LTT) and Dadar (DR). Some of the trains that ply between Thane and Mumbai are Mumbai Mail (11028), Mfp Ltt Express (11062), Dbg Ltt Express (11066), Konark Express (11020) and Asr Dr Express (11058) among others. The daily trains provide the best mode to travel from Thane to Mumbai. It is also possible to do online ticket reservation through the online booking services of the railways. Travelling by train is ideal for families consisting of small children and elders.

Apart from this, it is also possible to travel by car to Mumbai. The cabs would cost around INR 3000 for a round trip. Apart from this, it is also possible to travel from Thane to Mumbai by bus. For the people who love driving, it is also a good option to ride a bike or drive a car from Thane to Mumbai. But such a mode of travel is recommended only for youngsters.
