About Calle 13
- The majority of Calle 13's music is considered reggaeton. However, the duo has also infused other musical forms into its performance and songs. Some of its early work included jazz, salsa and bossa nova. Much of its later work contains elements of tango, cumbia and electronica.
- Calle 13 is comprised of two stepbrothers. Rene Perez Joglar, also known as Residente, is the lead vocalist, while Eduardo Cabra Martinez, also known as Visitante, handles the majority of the instrumentation.
- Residente and Visitante both went to school for occupations outside of music. Residente studied accounting, while Visitante obtained a degree in computer science, but both were unhappy with their career choices. Residente took a class in art, which prompted an interest in multimedia design and ultimately a career in music with his stepbrother.
- As of 2009, the duo had won five Latin Grammys, an MTV Latin award and a Grammy for Best Latin Urban Album. It was also nominated for a 2007 Billboard award in the Best Reggaeton Album category.
- Calle 13 broke into the American market in 2007 with a performance at the Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas. This was followed by a 2008 appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
