Steven Spielberg Steps Up to "When Worlds Collide"

Paramount and DreamWorks are going forward with the remake of "When Worlds Collide," the 1951 sci-fi thriller directed by Rudolph Mate, with "War of the Worlds" filmmaker Steven Spielberg set to produce.

Stephen Sommers ("Van Helsing") had been aboard the project as writer, director and producer, but stepped down to direct and produce "A Night at the Museum." Spielberg may decide to direct "When Worlds Collide" after he wraps shooting "Munich."

The original "When Worlds Collide" featured some of the best special effects of its day and posed the question: what would you do if you knew in eight months a runaway star and its accompanying planet will crash into earth with no way to stop the collision?
