Upcoming 2013 South Carolina Mud Runs

Mud runs are becoming immensely popular sporting contests, with featured races scheduled all over the country. People have embraced the idea of crawling through mud pits and over and under obstacles on the way to a team victory. Team camaraderie seems to contribute to the sense of accomplishment at reaching the finish line. Here are the highlights of some of the upcoming 2013 mud runs in South Carolina.

The 2013 Goodwill Mud Run is scheduled for April 13-14 in Greenville. The course is 3.5 miles with 35 obstacles. It is designed in the Marine Corps boot camp tradition with low crawls, climbing walls, swings, and a giant mud pit. The race is open to teams of four people with no age requirements. There will also be a Kid Zone area for children ages 4 and older. Proceeds from the race will benefit the long term mission of Goodwill Industries.

Mud Mania will be run on April 20 in Simpsonville, South Carolina's Heritage Park. The 5K course will have 20 obstacles. The terrain covers both wooded areas and fields, and it can be easily viewed by spectators. The course is appropriate for four person teams ages 8 and older. Children ages 7 and younger can enjoy the free Mini Mud Mania course. Proceeds will support Hillcrest Memorial Hospital.

One of the best known mud runs in the country is the USMC Ultimate Challenge Mud Run in Columbia. Thousands of marines from around the US and Canada will participate on four person teams. The grueling 5K obstacle course was designed by a Marine drill instructor and includes 36 obstacles. Participants will have to climb walls, crawl through trenches, swim, jump, and trudge through mud holes. Children may participate in the Devil Pup Challenge, in one of two short obstacle courses. Ages 5-8 can run a 100-yard course, and ages 9-13 can run a mile course with 8 obstacles. The event is held in spring and fall each year to benefit the Greater Columbia Marine Foundation. Monies raised support wounded marines and the families of marines killed while on active duty. The course is located on private property just southeast of Columbia off I-26 near Exit 119.

The 3rd Annual Dirty Myrtle Mud Run is scheduled for May 25 in the Waterbridge community of Myrtle Beach. The 3-mile course will have 20 obstacles including a ditch crawl, tire trot, hills, and a mud pit. There will also be a one mile kid's course. This race is open to both individuals and teams.
