Disaster Risk Management Training
- Disaster risk management training aims to increase effective disaster response by helping the student understand the linkages between disasters and development and to decrease societal vulnerability to disaster through sustainable development choices.
- Basic training courses cover topics, including the link between disasters and development; concepts of hazards, disasters, emergencies, risk, vulnerability assessment and capacities; key sustainable development policies; how to identify emergency needs and stakeholders; and how to encourage community and household emergency planning. Specialized trainings cover topics such as the application of disaster risk management to specific vulnerabilities and may include early childhood education and community education projects.
- Sources for training span the globe. Some teach the basics of the topic, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, while others provide specialized training, such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's course on applying disaster risk management to cultural heritage preservation. Organizations such as Risk RED (Reduction Education for Disasters) collaborate with local, regional, national and international organizations to create and disseminate printed and digital educational materials and conduct educational events for all age and educational levels. Generally, these trainings are cost free.
