How to Recognize Dementia in Dogs

1). Observe if your canine is interacting with your family less. Dogs that experience canine dementia will typically appear more withdrawn from the family. Your dog may have previously been right at your side and now he spends more time alone.
2). Notice if basic commands confuse your canine. For years, your dog may have obeyed basic commands such as sit, stay and lay down. However recently, your dog looks at you very confused when you give him a command. This symptom is very typical in dogs experiencing this condition.
3). Pay attention to aimless wandering. Dogs that experience dementia may begin to aimlessly wander around your home. Watch your dog as he gets up to see if he looks confused.
4). Observe intolerant behavior in your canine. While your dog previously was great around kids, now he seems easily annoyed. Irritability is a symptom of dementia in canines.
5). Watch for accidents in the house. Once a dog is housebroken, many dog owners are relieved they don’t have to clean up accidents. But when a dog gets older and experiences dementia, he may forget that relieving himself isn’t allowed in the house.
