One Way Ticket to Mars - The Beginning Of a New World?

Are the space adventures we see in movies finally coming true? When Mars One Project was launched last 2011, it took the world up by storm. The project offered a one way ticket to Mars not only for professional astronauts but to all qualified applicants around the world.

It was created by a non-profit organization known as Mars One Foundation. Their main goal is to set up a permanent human settlement on planet Mars by year 2023. Since it's a one way ticket, the chosen settlers will live on Mars until they die.

Reality TV

Along with Mars One Foundation, Interplanetary Media Group is also set to make the project into a reality TV show. The show will start from the application process to the everyday life in Mars. For the trip alone, the estimated budget is 6 billion dollars. That's excluding the maintenance cost to keep the Mars settlers alive.

Food on Mars

Mars One Foundation plans a supply mission by the year 2016 through their Space X Dragon ship. The ship will be launched by January and will arrive by October of 2016. This will contain 2,500 kilograms of food. Aside from the preserved foods, astronauts will have an inflatable plant production unit where they can grow fresh food.

The Journey

The project plans to send the first group of colonists by 2022. The trip to Mars will take about seven to eight months. According to space experts, this will depend on the Earth's relative position to Mars. Astronauts won't be able to shower during flight. Freeze dried and canned foods are their only option.

Life Support Units

Mars settlers will be provided with life support units. These components will serve as their living and working space. The units will contain bedrooms, working areas, living room and plant production room. Settlers will also enjoy shower provisions and cooking. When they leave the settlement, they are required to wear a special mars suit.

Training Process

Selected applicants will undergo immense and rigorous training before they leave earth. The training will last for eight years. They will also be isolated from the world to prepare them for limited human interaction. In addition to their acquired skills and expertise, they will also learn the strategies on cultivating crops, medical upkeep and machine repairs.

The Application

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for the project as long as he's using one of the most used languages on the internet. The application consists of general information, motivational letter, resume and video. 24% of applicants came from the U.S, mostly from New York, a good state for tax deed auctions. Round one ended last August 31 this year.

Selection Process

Applicants were judged on creativity, ability to trust, resiliency, adaptability and curiosity. Selected applicants from round one were required to provide a medical certificate of good health. Those who'll pass will proceed to round two which is the interview and round three which is the regional selection. Overall, there are about 300 regional selection committees.

International Selection

Round four of the application process will be broadcasted around the world. International groups will be created for the final selection. Mars One Foundation also set up a qualification process for the selection committee. Most applicants are also from the tax sale country, USA. By 2015, ten teams of four people will start in their astronaut training.
