How to Write a Philosophy of Teaching Statement
- 1). Explore your experience and ask yourself questions:
What do you believe about teaching? Learning? Think what do you like about other teachers in your life your own or observed ones. - 2). Do the research on the institution that you apply for the job. Check their mission and their statement for signs of what they value most in teaching and learning. So, your statement will probably vary if you apply to different educational establishment like community colleges, religious university and so on. Make sure that you understand what kind of instruction and teaching technologies are expected to be used.
- 3). Don't make a teaching philosophy statement a replica of your resume. It is not a simple list of what you've done.
- 4). Give example of how exactly you implement or going to implement the philosophical statement of for example encouraging collaboration in the classroom. Always show specific teaching techniques that you using to achieve that.
- 5). Mention your research interests in your philosophy teaching statement. A lot of schools want to see if you are worthy in your field and how well you can implement research in your teaching practice
- 6). Don't overdo it. Keep it simple, understandable, and real, don't boast or exaggerate. Also show that how through all these techniques and methods your students learn, don't forget that we are focusing on students and it is not all about you.
