Treatments for Fibromyalgia

    Diet/Nutrition

    • A healthy diet and proper nutrition should be implemented to help reduce symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help with inflammation and pain. Eating a diet high in fiber and drinking at least eight glasses of water daily can help eliminate toxins from the body that can contribute to fibromyalgia symptoms. Caffeine, alcohol, sugar, saturated and hydrogenated fats, and processed foods should be avoided as they may contribute to pain, fatigue and inflammation.

    Medications

    • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Cymbalta, Lyrica and Savella to assist with fibromyalgia treatment. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen, may also be used.

    Acupuncture

    • Acupunture is often used to treat pain and depression associated with fibromyalgia. Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is used to stimulate energy flow throughout the body with the use of needles. Treatment is generally once a week for six weeks.

    Exercise/Sleep

    • Exercising and getting adequate sleep can also help treat fibromyalgia. Exercise may be difficult for patients suffering from pain, but beginning slowly with walking, swimming, bicycling or jogging can help relieve pain, depression and muscle stiffness. According to Fibromyalgia Network, a study conducted by S. Hakki Onen, M.D., Ph.D., revealed that increased deep sleep patterns provided more pain relief than large doses of ibuprofen.

    Ayurvedic Treatment

    • The Ayurvedic approach can provide an alternative treatment for fibromyalgia sufferers. The Ayurvedic approach focuses on stabilizing the central nervous system. A lifestyle that promotes natural body rhythms by maintaining a daily regular routine may be beneficial. Yoga and meditation may be incorporated with Ayurvedic herbs.

    Psychological Support

    • Having a good support system can improve the quality of life. Counseling or psychological support may be implemented to help a patient deal with chronic pain, fatigue and depression. Psychological support can be extremely beneficial to assist family members and friends in understanding the daily challenges of fibromyalgia.
