A0, A1, A2 Printing Paper Savings

We all hear about how important the environment is day in day out and how we must maintain and look after our environment. That includes more recycling at home and in the work place. We have special bins now for different types of rubbish we create, glass, cardboard and plastic etc. This is important for the house-hold but recycling in the printing industry can not only be good for the environment but can save you money.

When it comes to large format printing for A1 Printing and A2 Printing we can save money by using different orientations for printing these sizes. This will in turn help our environment by creating less waste paper.

The majority of large format printers whether their black and white or colour machines usually print to a maximum length of 841mm. 841mm is the height of an A0 Print so we dont have to worry about recycling for this size. This is because we will change the orientation to portrait if the machine doesnt do this for us automatically. This will result in the print been processed at the 841mm height of the A0 first at portrait and once the machine reaches the length of the A0, 1189mm it will trim that edge. This results in no wastage of paper and a clean cut A0 Printing process.

A1 printing is different even though the length of the print is the same as the height of an A0 at 841mm. This gives you the first clue at how we may be able to save money and the rainforests. A1 Prints need to be set at landscape in order for this to work. The large format printers may not do this one for you automatically so check! The result of this orientation set for this print size will result in the printer processing the print at 841mm length straight out of the machine at landscape and then trim the height of the print at 594mm. No waste again, no need to get the scissors out and no need to cut anymore trees down.

A2 printing breaks our clean cut prints though now but we can still manipulate the orientation to make a saving. The length of an A2 print is 594mm the same as the height of an A1 print. So we cant make a saving or a clean cut print with our 841mm machine unless we have a roll thats at a 594mm length, but that would be an extra cost. So to create less waste here we will set the orientation to landscape again. Once the machine processes this print it will trim the height of the A2 edge which is 420mm. This will leave us with some manual trimming to do and we may have to get our scissors out if we dont have a guillotine. But we can still recycle this cut. We will be left with an A3 print size to use here and feed manually into the machine if your large format printer has this feature or trim again for A4s.

These techniques are especially important when you are using expensive stock paper e.g. 200gsm gloss. You dont want much wastage here or print errors. It may also be worth getting an A2 roll here if the majority of your work is A2 poster printing.

Dont forget if youre not using your waste cuts or thinking about what the best way to print like Ive outlined make sure you recycle properly. Print companies go through loads of test prints and may make a few errors here and there and will accumulate a lot of waste paper. You as a business are responsible for all this waste and making sure it is disposed of properly. You can speak to your local council and acquire large scale paper bins that are emptied once a month and more if necessary. These also offer the assurance that these waste cuts or prints will be shredded and any sensitive information relating to yourself or your customers will not be pasted on to others. So knowing that youre helping the environment, saving your company money and disposing of waste effectively you can rest assure youre doing your bit!
