Washington DC Weekend Activities
- One of the biggest tourist attractions of Washington, D.C., is the plethora of free museums and exhibits. Along the National Mall lie the Museum of Natural History, National Museum of Art, the National Aeronautic and Space Museum and many other noteworthy sites, all encompassing the Smithsonian Institute. These museums include exhibits with subject matter ranging from Lindbergh's famous flight and dinosaurs to an actual painting by Leonardo da Vinci. These museums are popular for the weekend warriors; the National Zoo and the Aquarium are both world-class venues that are frequented often on the weekends; however, they are still free of charge.
- Georgetown, a special quadrant of Washington, D.C., was founded in 1751. One of the favorite weekend activities of residents and tourists is to explore this quaint, historic district. Founded right along the Potomac River, the scenery contains the green banks of this massive river juxtaposed with the colonial architecture indicative of Georgetown. The Folgers Shakespeare Theatre offers some of the finest Shakespearean productions. Plays are performed on weekends, and many travelers consider seeing a Folgers play one of the best activities of the weekend. The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts is another mecca for weekend activities. The Kennedy Center produces many unique high-quality plays; tourists and residents flock to this theater on weekend nights. Built directly on the Potomac River, this new harbor complex features docks, restaurants, shops and a unique opportunity to view Washington, D.C., and the unique Potomac River, which flows right through it and was once vital to its existence before the onset of cars and other motorized vehicles. On the weekend, this special section of the city is bustling with people. Attracting both residents and tourists, the National Harbor is a popular weekend site.
