Beginning Guitar Lessons - 3 Keys to Learning the Right Way

Many people are interested in beginning guitar lessons - but they do not know where to start.
One question to ask yourself is "Why do I want to learn to play the guitar?" When I started, I was 10 years old and I just thought it would be cool.
Some people want to learn to play their favorite song, others to entertain others and finally some want to become rock stars.
Your reason for starting will give you motivation to keep studying.
It will also influence your choice of advanced training.
Whatever your goal, it all starts at the beginning.
The first step is to find an instructor.
Your instructor will tell you and show you what to do at each step of the way.
In addition, they will give you feedback as to what you are doing right and what needs improvement and how to make the changes.
There are many options for finding a guitar teacher.
Look in the classified ads in your local newspaper, check out the postings at your favorite music store, and of course check the yellow pages.
You can also look online in your favorite search engine (just be sure to add your city and state).
Alternatively, there are a number of online and DVD based guitar lessons.
The disadvantage with these is the lack of one on one tutoring.
However, you are able to learn at your own pace and you can spend extra time on those lessons that are more difficult for you.
Be sure to find out whether you can get a free trial or sample of the lessons to see if they fit for you.
Step two is to set up a practice schedule for yourself.
Whichever instruction method you choose, regular practice will help you build skill and knowledge.
I recommend practicing a half hour or more at a time.
Schedule 3 to 5 sessions a week between lessons.
It is better to practice more often during the week rather than having 1 or 2 long sessions.
The first session you may be figuring out exactly what to do and each time after that you begin to build your playing skill.
Sticking to a schedule is especially important if you opt for an online or DVD guitar program.
Step 3: Get feedback on your playing.
If you are having trouble with a particular technique or chord...
ask your instructor.
If you practice something incorrectly, you will learn it that way and it will be more difficult to change a bad habit later.
Write down the things you have difficulty with and bring it up at your next lesson.
If you are taking classes online or by DVD be sure to use the forums or online support to ask questions.
When beginning guitar lessons, it is important to choose the right type of instruction for you.
Once you are enrolled, it is important that you practice regularly so you can improve every week.
Finally, feedback from your teacher is vital so that you can move beyond any difficulties and learn the right way.
