Something You Should know About Power Chair Battery Charger
The power chair battery charger is a must have for any power chairs and mobility scooters. Today millions of people are benefiting from them and it has made their lives so much easier. The importance of a power chair battery charger is such that no power chair can exist without it. As its life is dependent on the battery charger, the selection of the charger is as important as the power chair itself. Even though all the batteries are made to last for a long time but eventually they will need to be replaced one day. Often 24 volt system is used in most of the electric mobility devices, they are in the shape of two 12 volt units tied together with the battery pack. When you are looking to differentiate the batteries, this is usually based on a couple of factors including the composition and amp hour rating.
There are other factors as well that can be attributed towards differentiating the batteries, these include physical size and battery properties. One thing common in all of them is that as long as you keep them properly charged, they will work excellent and provide services for a very long time. Some of the most popular power batteries are explained below.
SLA Batteries
Sealed Lead Acid batteries, is commonly as SLA batteries. The best feature of these batteries is that they are maintenance free. These batteries are completely enclosed units in which the electrolyte liquid known as the battery acid is permanently sealed. This process is also referred to as sealed lead acid. The benefit of sealing it is that you will never ever have to worry about leakage of the acid or adding acid from time to time. These batteries are a little bit more expensive but because of their easy maintenance, today most of the power chair batteries use them.
AGM Batteries
Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries were initially developed for military aircraft, they use a mat similar to a fiberglass for holding the electrolyte in a stable spill proof suspension. It is more effective when exposed to colder temperatures, as it doesn't suffer from low voltage. The next best feature about this battery is that recharging is very quick and efficient. As these batteries are also sealed like SLA batteries, they can be put under the same category but not every SLA battery can be an AGM battery.
GEL Batteries
As the name suggests, the electrolyte is in a gel-cell battery instead of a liquid. It is more like a gelatin shaped semi solid mass, and these are commonly known for batteries used in motorbikes. Gel batteries have got many advantages as compared to the AGM batteries if used for power chair users and mobility scooters. Because it doesn't contain liquid, gel battery continues to work perfectly even if it is upside down. Its other advantage is that no fumes are produced and is considered to be the safest type of battery for scooters and power chairs to be used indoors. They also have a longer lifespan as compared to its counterparts.
