How to Fix a Master File Table in NTFS

    • 1). Try to fix the MFT using Check Disk. You can run this utility from within the Windows environment if Windows is bootable. Open "My Computer," right-click on the drive or partition and select "Properties." Then access the "Tools" tab to find Check Disk.

    • 2). Boot from startup floppies or a Windows CD-ROM to access the Recovery Console and type "CHKDSK" to run it from the console If you can't boot Windows. This may find an MFT error and fix it for you.

    • 3). Use a third-party file recovery software program to save all your files to another drive or partition and then reformat the damaged partition if Check Disk fails to fix the problem. Reformatting will create a new master file table.
