How to Find Out If I Was Approved or Denied for Unemployment Benefits

    • 1). Check your mail. The state agency will send a letter telling you if your application was approved or denied. You can appeal if the state turns down your application.

    • 2). Get the Web address and telephone number for the agency in your state handling unemployment benefits claims. Check other correspondence the agency sent you.

    • 3). Visit the Web address and look for a menu tab for checking the status of a claim, or something similar. Click on the tab and follow the prompts to determine if your application was approved or denied.

    • 4). Call or visit the agency as an alternative. Provide your Social Security number or claim reference number for an update.
