    Study Your Holy Documents

Whether you study the Koran, the Book of Mormon, the Old Testament, the New Testament or something entirely different, your religion's holy documents offer you insight into your religion's core beliefs. Studying the stories and information presented in them can help you grow closer to God by helping you live your life in a more pleasing and honorable way.

    Attend Religious Services

    • Religious services offer the chance to talk to fellow members of your faith. Most services include a time of teaching and a period of worship, but before and after services you will have the opportunity to mingle with other people. Use religious services to learn more about your religion, but also to talk with others about God.

    Spend Time in Prayer

While prayer may seem like a natural way to grow spiritually, many people find it difficult to actually sit down and talk to God. If you need to, pencil in 10 minutes on your calendar so you remember to pray. Pray out loud with a friend or spouse or just pray alone. Ask God for guidance with any issues you're struggling with, pray about a friend or relationship, thank God for your blessings and confess any shortcomings in your life. If you're uncomfortable praying out loud, consider keeping a prayer journal in which you write your thoughts to God.

    Fast

    • One method frequently used to grow closer to God is to fast. Historically, a fast refers to a period of time you refrain from eating as a way to depend on God. During a fast, you will be hungry, so you will naturally spend more time praying and trying to feel closer to God. If you don't want to give up eating, especially if you have medical problems, consider a fast from something else. Possible fast ideas include giving up the Internet, avoiding television or even giving up junk food for a few days or a week. During your fast, spend time reading your scriptures and maintaining a prayerful attitude.
