Trampoline Recall Sparks Debate about Safety of Child Toys

All parents want their child to live a long, safe, and happy life, but what happens when the objects of their affections – their toys – pose a threat to your child's safety?

Recently, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled about 92,000 Sportspower BouncePro 14' Trampolines. They warned consumers to verify which type of trampoline they own and to ensure that they did not use it if it was ones named in the recall. They also reminded consumers that it is illegal to resell any product named in a recall.

The product is sold in Wal-Mart Stores around the country, and is produced by Sportspower Limited of Hong Kong, China. The exact number and style of the trampolines was listed as the "Sportspower BouncePro 14' Trampoline with brown mesh netting the UPC code 68706404210 and 68706404244 is listed on the box. Sportspower BouncePro 14 and TR-14-63-A are printed on the leg of the trampoline frame."

The trampolines are being recalled after at least 11 children were injured when the netting in the center of the toy broke, and allowed them to fall through. Their numerous injuries included broken bones, back and neck injuries, and contusions to the face and head.

The toy was sold in Wal-Mart stores from February 2009 to February 2012 throughout the United States and cost about $275.

Consumers are asked to contact Sportspower's customer service hotline for more information at (888) 965-0565 from 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.

This incident is the latest in a long line of consumer product recalls, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Another child's product was recalled recently for failure to perform as adequately as advertised. The child safety lock – Safety 1st - used by many parents to prevent children from access to drawers with chemicals and sharp objects, was recalled today. Over 110 incidents of lock failure have been reported, and in at least one case the child was severely injured by the problem.

The lack of safety from child's products has prompted parental advocate groups to speak out against groups who try to cut corners and save money by making faulty items.

Still, the CPSC asks for anyone injured by any of these product recalls to contact them directly to report it.
