How to Ski out of an Avalanche

  • 1). Do everything in your power to keep your skis underneath you.

  • 2). Get into an athletic survival stance with your knees bent and feet no closer together than shoulder width.

  • 3). Lower your center of gravity without leaning too far into the hill. If you lean too far to one side you are more likely to be swept off your feet.

  • 4). Use your arms to keep you afloat (as if you were swimming) when too much sloughing snow surrounds you.

  • 5). Ski straight to gain speed and stay on top or ahead of the sloughing snow.

  • 6). Turn off to the side and away from the fall line so the snow passes you by on its way downhill.

  • 7). Look above you to make sure no other avalanches are on their way toward you.
